STATEMENT
My work is inspired by themes surrounding human evolution. This includes our dispersal from the African continent, evolutionary change over time, and the use of genome editing techniques that quickly and efficiently alter a few billion years of genetic evolution. It also includes our unique use of memes, by which we create culture.
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Winnipeg, Gerry Collins completed a Zoology degree with a minor in Chemistry from University of Manitoba, followed by a Fine Arts degree from Université de Moncton in 1997. She has had solo and group shows in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Manitoba and France. She has twice been a jury member for the Canada Council for the Arts, as well as for the Galerie Sans Nom, the artist-run centre in Moncton, NB. In 1999, her project, “Les Portes Françaises” was selected as a permanent sculpture by the Symposium d'Art Actuel, held in honour of the World Francophone Summit. In 2005, she was first runner up for the Canadian Federal Government Sculptor position. In 2017, one of her amphorae was awarded Honourable Mention at the International Ceramics Competition in Gualdo Tadino, Italy. Her work is in public and private collections.
She believes in the importance of art education in public schools and taught as invited artist for eight years in the francophone District 1 schools of Greater Moncton through the GénieArts program. She also taught Sculpture and Ceramics courses as a sessional lecturer at Université de Moncton during the years 1999 to 2016. She is now focused exclusively on the production of her craft.
DÉMARCHE
Je suis inspirée par les thèmes d'évolution, notamment: notre dispersion à partir du continent Africain, les évolutions à travers le temps, et la manipulation du génome humain, qui peut changer brusquement quelques milliards d'années d'évolution génétique. Un autre thème qui m'intéresse s'agit de notre utilisation unique des mèmes (unités de la culture).
BIOGRAPHIE
Née à Winnipeg, Gerry Collins détient un baccalauréat en Zoologie avec une mineure en Chimie de l'Université du Manitoba et un baccalauréat en Arts Visuels de l'Université de Moncton (1997). Elle a eu des expositions solo ainsi que des expositions du groupe au Nouveau-Brunswick, en Nouvelle-Écosse, au Québec, au Manitoba et en France. Elle a été juriste à deux occasions pour Le Conseil des Arts du Canada, ainsi que pour La Galerie Sans Nom, le centre d'artistes auto-géré à Moncton, N.-B. En 1999, son projet Les Portes Françaises, a été selectionné comme sculpture permanente par le Symposium d'art Actuel en honneur du Sommet Mondial de la Francophonie. En 2005, elle était première finaliste pour le poste de Sculpteur du Gouvernement Fédéral du Canada. En 2017, une de ses amphores a reçu une mention honorable à la Compétition Internationale à Gualdo Tadino en Italie. Son travail est dans des collections publiques et privées.
Elle croit à l'importance de l'éducation en arts visuels dans les écoles publiques et elle a enseigné comme artiste invitée du progamme GénieArts dans les écoles publiques du District scolaire 1 de Grand Moncton. Elle a enseigné La Sculpture et la Céramique comme chargée de cours à l'Université de Moncton durant les années 1999 à 2016. Elle consacre son temps uniquement à la production de son oeuvre.
